Many of us have had that indescribable feeling of going back to work after being on leave, when you know you have to go back to earn money, but it is not really what you want to do. Maybe the job isn’t fulfilling, you have colleagues you don’t particularly want to see, possibly your work hours or time away is long and you want to spend more time with your children, in your home.
Whilst some people bite at the bit to get back to work or back to normality, others enjoy finding a new norm, or realise just how much their current role negatively impacts their lives and isn’t what they want long term.
To get true fulfilment and happiness in your career or home-life, it’s important to match your values and beliefs. For example, if you have a young family and really want to spend more time with them, but you are working all the hours you can to provide, there is a mismatch.
Of course there are things that you can do to ease your work situations, like asking to work from home part-time, but if you are in a situation where you want to make a big change, and either you don’t know where to start, or you don’t know what you could do, start asking yourself two simple questions.
- How can I make a positive change in my life?
- What resources will I need?
Asking ‘what’ and ‘how’ questions will open your subconscious mind to the answers. This is because we have a bunch of nerves in our brainstem called the Reticular Activating System (RAS), that filter out information, to allow the important stuff to get through. It is why if you are looking to buy a certain car you will see them everywhere, RAS is responsible for when we tune out in a busy bar, but snap to attention if we hear our name mentioned and it’s why we hear our own child’s cry or voice above all other children.
So, keep it simple, ask the two questions of yourself each day and your subconscious mind will be on the alert to find the answers for you. Once you have started the process, there are many NLP processes to draw upon, small steps or goals to get you where you want to be both short and long term, to take control of your future.
