They say that 90 days can make a habit, and as we have now been in lockdown for longer than that, it’s possible you have made new habits of your own, some great, others not so good.
I’m hearing a lot about the ‘Lockdown Stone’ and there are so many reasons that people have put on weight, from pure overindulgence to emotional eating and all in between.
Some examples I’ve been speaking with people about, you may recognise – they include weight creeping up from eating extra biscuits or cakes, making extravagant meals or puddings to compensate for not going out. Some have been increasing portion sizes and having second helpings. Others have lacked the motivation, as they have lost their reasons for weight-loss, with holidays and celebrations being cancelled.
As the pubs have been closed, lots of people have increased their at-home drinking habits, both regularity and amount of consumption. Along with the calories in alcohol, comes the loss of inhibitions that alcohol brings; and when it comes to reaching out for your favourite snack, unlike the pub, it is readily available in the cupboard!
The reasons people have been over-eating though is the important part. Often it is because there is something missing in their life, which leads to some form of comfort eating. When I support someone to lose weight through hypnotherapy, I offer two programmes – Weight Loss and Change and Hypnotic Gastric Band, and following consultation, both programmes start with a questionnaire as to why a client eats or drinks more than they need. It no longer surprises me when clients tick most of the boxes for their reasons for being over-weight.
Understanding, exploring and working through the reasons why we do anything is always a fantastic place to start; often boredom, sadness, grief, stress, anxiety and reward are reasons why people turn to food and drink for comfort and the short-lived dopamine kick. This quick spike often makes things lots worse afterwards as shame, anger and guilt kick in.
Through a blend of hypnotherapy, NLP and Emotional Freedom Technique we can make changes to unwanted habits immediately, and through continued support and practicing learned techniques for just a few moments a day, the changes can become permanent.
