As the days get shorter, we get less exposure to sunlight, which is thought to increase the brain's release of a hormone called serotonin. Serotonin is associated with boosting mood and helping a person feel calm and focused, and so this can contribute to feelings of low mood.
Happy Hormones
Luckily there are a number of ‘happy hormones’ in the body that can promote feelings of happiness and positivity and they include the reward and pleasure hormone dopamine; endorphins which are our natural pain relievers; the aforementioned serotonin which helps regulate sleep, digestion, and mood, and oxytocin - sometimes referred to as the love hormone.
Here are some tips that complement the recommended NHS 5 Ways to Mental Wellbeing, to help boost the hormones and aid your mental health:
1. Connect with other people
- good relationships are important for your mental wellbeing. ...enjoying being with others, laughing, enjoying a funny film with others can help release oxytocin, as can stroking your favourite pet.
2. Physical activity
is not only great for your physical health and fitness, but it helps with your mental wellbeing by releasing endorphins and raising levels of serotonin and dopamine.
3. Learning new skills
- the feeling of learning and achievement can help to release dopamine which in turn can help with your motivation for other things.
4. Give to others
- research suggests that acts of kindness can also release “the love hormone” oxytocin, giving your levels a boost, with the added bonus of lowering your blood pressure.
5. Mindfulness
(paying attention to the present moment) helps to lower stress hormones, and by taking mindfulness deeper through meditation and hypnotherapy will also help to release dopamine.
