It was an amazing spectacle to watch this morning as Eliud Kipchoge broke the record and re-wrote history books by running a Marathon 26.2 miles in1 hour 59 mins 40.2 seconds in Vienna this morning.
Eliud, who has won 11 of the last 12 marathon's he has ran, started his running when he had to run 2 miles to school each day, as a child in Kenya. Now, today the world watched him as he beamed with joy and elation and said “No Human is Limited.”
This was Eluid's second attempt at achieving a Marathon in under two hours and it now puts him in the history books with Sir Roger Bannister.
As he saw the finish line, with 300 metres to go he kicked forward and his amazing team dropped back in a line behind him; truly having his back covered. At the end of the race he said that he did it “In order to inspire other people to tell other people you know your mind is limited, you can do it. I expect everyone will start to run under 2 minutes in the future.”
His belief that it was possible, coupled with an amazing team around him, including elite and Olympian pace-makers, meticulous planning and specialist pacing technology, all ensured he was where he needed to be to achieve the record.
Not all of us can be visionaries like Eliud Kipchoge and we may hold some beliefs that limit what we can, or can’t achieve. In NLP terms, Eliud's achievement enables the rest of the world to see possibilities and model (or copy) his brilliant techniques. By opening our minds to possibilities and studying people at the top of whatever game they excel in, can enable us to get and be where we want to be in life.
The unconscious mind will support you in changing your beliefs and pushing your limits. So prior to today, runners may not have attempted to run 26.2 miles in under 2 hours, because they may have thought it possible. Now they know it is possible and so if it is achievable for one person it's achievable for others.
Outside of sport, if for example, you have to stand up and give a presentation for work, or for an interview and you are nervous at the thought, you could focus a time when something has gone really well for you, in a previous interview or presentation and replicate your thoughts at the time, your stance, voice tone and method of presentation, then practice over and again, until it becomes habit.
Alternately you can choose somebody you know or have seen do a fantastic presentation and model what makes them successful. This does not mean to become that person, but to take on the attributes that help them engage with an audience, and could include their stance, voice tone and pace of delivery and how and what was said. What makes them so engaging or successful?
You can then visualise yourself stepping into their body and feel how it feels to be them, see and hear what they may hear, what and how they do things. You may like to study someone via their blogs or YouTube channel and immerse yourself in their strategies, really tune in to what makes them so good and replicate their brilliance.
Once you feel you have nailed the techniques you want to achieve, then practice makes perfect. Visualise yourself in the future achieving your goal and getting better and better.
Eliud Kipchoge will have visualised himself breaking the record time and again in his mind, embedding the possibility that it was achievable. He will have visualised passed the time he achieved the record and identified exactly what he needed to do to achieve it, perfecting his stride, bringing in the right team, maybe as far as ensuring the weather conditions would be favourable.
As Kipchoge proved today, once limitations are removed, a positive mindset is achieved and strategies are in place, so much is possible.
