Looking after your mental health is very important at any time of year and as the festive period has additional pressures that may trigger additional anxiety or stress, so it can be helpful to be prepared and recognise your trigger points. You can then help stop your inner tensions building by taking a short break, or time-out to reduce the chances of experiencing a heightened episode in overwhelming times. It can be helpful for you to visualise releasing tension and welcome in positive thoughts.
Unless you are practiced in mindfulness or meditation, it may be difficult to visualise releasing anxieties, tension and frustration on your own (after all, if it was easy everyone would be a picture of calmness!); so I have recorded a short 10 minute visualisation and I hope this may help you through. In the hubbub of festivities and whilst people are consumed in their favourite things, most of us can find time to slip off for 10 minutes.
Although it may be beneficial to lie or sit down in a quiet room, if you are visiting friends or relatives, you could listen when going for a walk after Christmas lunch; alternatively, you could step outside or sit in the car (stationary/engine off). If you’re not comfortable explaining to others how you are feeling, you could listen on your mobile and it can seem to others that you are making a 10-minute phone call. Alternatively pop in some ear-phones and offer to do the dishes!
Wherever you may be, find yourself a space to gather your thoughts to treat yourself to revitalise, regenerate your inner calm and peace; to turn off from the busyness of the day, the people and noise of every-day life, the noise in your mind.
